Caps For Cuties - Sour Cream Pumpkin Pie
Thursday, December 13th, 2007
Penelope’s Aunt Marion e-mailed her with news about her other niece, 10-year old Katelyn in Studio City, California. Aunt Marion is the nerve center of the family’s communication matrix; and with this story, everyone’s especially glad because we’re all proud of Katelyn who (age 10, remember) in August of 2007 started a non-profit called Caps for Cuties.Katelyn began knitting caps for adults as a way to earn extra money. Knitting seems to run in the family (Aunt Lee’s Sour Cream Pumpkin Pie). Then she realized she could make small size caps for babies, and went a step further (or smaller), making them for preemies. Now Katie makes preemie caps exclusively and donates them to the neonatal intensive care unit at Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center, where she was born. It’s especially important for babies to have their heads covered because heat escapes through the head. Keeping their tiny heads warm helps the newborns to grow. During her last cap drop-off, Katelyn got to walk through the NICU and see one of the new babies wearing her latest creation!Besides knitting caps, Katelyn is very active in school and soccer, and carries the regular overachieving workload of most 10-year olds. And since Caps for Cuties is currently a one-kid-operation, Katelyn would appreciate any volunteers.Anyone who would like to donate time or yarn is welcome to contact: and put “Volunteer” in the subject header. This is one of the few times Penelope suggests that people stop baking and start knitting!
