Deliciously Stoned - Joe’s Stone Crab Key Lime Pie
This week Penelope follows the journey of Joe Weiss, another member of the Manhattan-Miami migration, to his ultimate destination of Miami Beach, Florida where the creamiest, tangiest key lime pie isn’t going anywhere except onto just about every table at Joe’s Stone Crab. Joe’s has been a family-run restaurant since 1913 when Joe’s asthma forced him to flee New York City for cleaner air, not to mention more cheerful colors. Fleeing was kind of a natural back then, but baking a great key lime always took special talent; which is why Joe’s Stone Crab has become world famous for its key lime pie. Thousands of key limers have said so, and this is no small feat. Key limers are notoriously competitive. You don’t see blueberry people duking it out over tanginess, but they didn’t flee much either. If Miami Beach isn’t your dream destination, not only will Joe’s Stone Crab ship anywhere in the continental United States, but Joe’s has generously posted its Key Lime Pie recipe right on its website. If you can make it as well as Joe’s family does, more power to you. They’re not too worried. And if you’re in a nautical mood, the Stone Crabs aren’t half bad either. Go to Joe’s Stone Crab and find out for yourself.
